Britain's Highest Railway Station

... is not on Snowdon any more. The Cairngorm Mountain Railway opened in 2001 to replace the White Lady chairlift, which opened in 1961 but had proved too sensitive to the strong winds in the area. The highest station on Cairngorm is at 3,599 feet (1,097 metres) above sea level, and serves the Ptarmigan Restaurant.

The Cairngorm railway runs on the funicular principle. That is, it has two cars which counterbalance each other, one descending while the other ascends.
